NORTH AUSTIN

An established neighborhood with a quiet, family-friendly atmosphere.

Welcome to North Austin

North Austin offers a peaceful and approachable atmosphere with a family-friendly vibe. A beautiful blending of quiet neighborhoods, parks, restaurants, shops, and entertainment makes this a sought-after place to call home. It’s not just the abundance of opportunities that makes North Austin attractive, though; it’s the sense of community.

Neighborhood residents appreciate the remnants of Austin’s past found at every turn. Many neighborhoods were formed after World War II, so bungalow homes dating back to the 1940s and ‘50s are common in the area. Streets are lined with large, shady trees, one-story houses, curbed driveways, and homes built to withstand the test of time, giving one the feeling of being in the past. Other areas offer larger homes and lots with contemporary ranches and well-maintained landscaping.

The south end of the area offers a more lively atmosphere, similar to South Austin. Plenty of local shopping, cafes, coffee shops, and live music fill the area to make your days more entertaining. Those looking for the perfect blending of quiet suburbia and vibrant authenticity will find that North Austin is the ideal place to reside.

What to Love

  • An established area with ties dating back to World War II
  • Abundant entertainment options, especially toward the south end
  • A family-friendly, community-oriented atmosphere

Local Lifestyle

Though North Austin may seem mostly suburban, it offers its unique mixture of homes, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. Residents can experience gourmet tacos in an auntie’s taco truck, delectable broth in a mother’s pho shop, or a Michelin-star experience in a newer restaurant.

There are many different ways to experience the area, and the vibe changes depending on where you go. If you’re near the Domain, it will be different than if you’re near the northern side of the area. Residents will find plenty of local meet-ups and groups to suit their personalities, so finding a spot for you should be easy.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Much like the rest of North Austin, the restaurant options are eclectic and unique, with a sampling of food from various cultures. A cozy cafe featuring delectable North Italian food can be found at Taverna, while hot and spicy Thai food is served across the area at Thai Kun.

Tickle your tastebuds at Tacodeli, a longstanding Austin staple that serves fresh, handmade tacos using locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible. Their award-winning salsas take their tacos to the next level; pair them with one of their seasonal beverages for an incredible experience.

The Chinatown Center is another excellent option. With more than 35 authentic options, this is the most extensive Asian grocery store in central Texas. Still, North Austin offers more options like Circle Brewing Co, a local brewhouse that believes less is more, and Cafe Java, a quaint cafe that serves coffee, sandwiches, and small bites.

Things to Do

Those who love a vibrant and hip lifestyle will enjoy everything downtown Austin offers. With an assortment of nightlife, festivals for every season, and various music options, you will never run out of fun things to do.

The South by Southwest Festival (abbreviated as SXSW) is an annual celebration of all things media. Experience the convergence of technology, film, education, music, and culture in this multi-day event. If that weren’t enough entertainment, the ACL Music Festival also graces the area yearly with even more entertainment. This event features hundreds of artists, local food vendors, and fun for people of all ages.

A trip to Rainey Street offers a unique look at the renovated bungalows that have become bars, restaurants, and iconic landmarks for live entertainment. This area also features plenty of stops to enjoy art of all varieties, plus walking trails that tell the tale of Austin neighborhoods from a local perspective.

Other notable things to explore in the area include the Zilker Kite Festival (running for over 90 years), Trail of Lights (a magical winter wonderland), and The Continental Club (an iconic music venue).
