Local Lifestyle

Locals love East Austin for the vibrancy that emanates from every corner. From the local street art to the cocktail bars filling old bungalows, you can feel the energy everywhere you go. This highly walkable, close-knit community is the perfect spot for young professionals and families who want to embrace the creative side of life.

The quiet streets give way to a mixture of historic homes and new construction, each with a sense of pride. You’ll have your choice of older homes with small, well-kept yards or the more luxurious new builds that offer a contemporary feeling. Some condominiums and luxury high-rises make up part of the area, but part of the appeal in East Austin is to keep the energetic and quirky vibe locals have come to know and love.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

East Austin has plenty of unique shopping and dining options to satisfy everyone’s needs. With Texas being famous for its barbecue, it’s no surprise that this area has many locally-loved barbecue options.

Franklin’s BBQ is a long-standing tradition in the Austin area. If the long lines to grab some of their smoked briskets is any indication, you’d better arrive early. Another excellent option for barbecue is La Barbecue, a smaller option in a local market, dishing up some delectable offerings.

Justine’s is the perfect spot to enjoy the local ambiance, located in one of the old bungalows with quaint lights strung on the patio. Don’t let the location fool you; this upscale restaurant features an unforgettable late-night French menu. You’ll also find options like Patrizi’s (an old-school Italian food truck) and Colleen’s Kitchen (a go-to neighborhood spot featuring Southern-fried staples).

As a neighborhood institution for more than 25 years, Quickie Pickie is a unique hybrid that suits the area well. Part grocery store, part cafe, and part beer spot, this quirky spot is a local favorite.

Things to Do

East Austin offers plenty for residents to enjoy, from the creative art and music scene to the natural outdoor beauty of Texas.

A celebration of the arts, the East Austin Studio Tour melds east and west into one beautiful exhibit showcasing the creative practices of the area. Similarly, the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) highlights artists from a variety of medium methods to bring to life a multi-day event packed with fun. Enjoy film, TV, music, exhibitions, and more.

The Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail gives residents a lovely path to explore along Ladybird Lake. This lush, urban pathway flows with the lake and around neighborhoods, buildings, local attractions, and more.

Residents can embrace the local economy at the Hope Farmer’s Market and Mueller Market District, indulging in locally sourced fruits and vegetables. Families enjoy a day at the Thinkery Children’s Museum, where kids can experience a truly hands-on, inquiry-based way of learning.
